This week’s brand profile features one of our most popular brands; RIVSALT! The Swedish gourmet food brand has an amazing product range and a super interesting backstory so find out more below.
Brand History
Rivsalt is a Swedish brand founded in 2013 by entrepreneur and designer Jens Sandringer. Jens came up with the concept while dining at a Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant in Beijing, where the master chef grated salt over the dishes using a large grater and big salt rock. This unique experience which sparked the initial product idea complementing the rise of Scandinavian foodie and design trends and the original RIVSALT product was launched in Sweden 2013. According to Jens:
“The inspiration came from a 3 month "working long stay" in Beijing 2008. My favourite teppanyaki restaurant was grating rock salt over our food using a large Japanese ginger grater. I thought it was a cool experience and wanted to buy a product to have on my dining table. The product did not exist, so I casually started to design it and the rest is history.”
Design & Experience
Like with any new product, it can take a lengthy process to ensure the product itself and the packaging are going to be a success. Born from a large number of prototypes, first in cardboard then in wood and metal, the initial design thoughts were all about creating a dining table centrepiece. Consequently, size and product simplicity were the two most important elements in the process. The aim was to make it aesthetically pleasing so that it would stay on the dining table as a design object, but simple enough so that anyone would feel comfortable enough to pick it up and use it with their food.
Although Rivsalt started off with a focus on salt and salt graters, since 2013 they’ve continued to expand their range at a rapid rate. Now with around 30 brilliant products including chili, cinnamon, ginger, liquorice, nutmeg and many more, they are always looking to improve on what you can do with your meals in a way that makes you feel as though you are a gourmet chef.
